Merry Christmas!

Those of you who fished offshore with June Bug in 2010 know what a super year we had.  Plenty of Blue and White Marlin and an outstanding catch of Tunas of various sorts.

Thanks for your business and let's do it again next year.

For those of you who did not fish with us offshore this year, you missed the best season in 20 years.

Now that the really cold weather has arrived, most of the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have finished putting their boats away for the winter or are in the process of doing so.

Just as all anglers should do, they are cleaning and organizing all of their gear and tackle so that they will be ready to go first thing in the spring. It won’t be long until the fish on the wrecks start to bite, and the migrating bluefish and stripers make their first appearance.

All of the captains send along their sincere wishes to all anglers for a happy holiday season and hope that all find their stockings filled with lures and other fishing knickknacks.

Anyone seeking additional information on the association or interested in bookings for the 2011 season can find their questions answered at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 1-877-LBI-BHCFA (1-877-524-2423).

Things are starting to wind down for most of the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association, but the “Miss Beach Haven” continues to haul fish over the rails on a regular basis.

Sal Rosa, mate on the “Miss Beach Haven,” reports they sailed on Thanksgiving with a handful of anglers. They had to work hard but managed to put together a respectable catch of bluefish and stripers. Mike from Tabernacle took top honors with a 12-pound striper.

On  the day after Thanksgiving, rather than heading to the Mall on Black Friday, Sal helped a small group of anglers have a great day of striper fishing despite some nasty conditions. Originally they planned to fish for blackfish, but made the move to stripers with great success. The bass were in the 8-15 pound range.

Saturday’s trip was made in some nasty seas, but the fishermen were able to find a good number of wreck fish in the 1-3 pound range. John Cheeseman won the pool with a 5.5 pound blackfish. On the way in some gannets diving helped them jig up some blues and stripers.

Sunday’s ocean conditions were nicer. The first wreck produced mostly shorts, but the next stop provided great fishing with many anglers limiting out. Cheeseman again won the pool, this time with a 6 pounder.

Captain John Koegler of “Pop’s Pride” reports he has pulled his boat and totally winterized it until Spring 2011. Captain John said it was 60-degrees when he was blocking the boat up, and it made him look forward to spring fishing already.

Weekly Association Report
Report posted by Jim Hutchinson Sr. of the on 11/24/10

The boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been splitting their time successfully between blackfish and striped bass.

The “Miss Beach Haven” under Captain Frank Camarda has been sailing both for striped bass and hitting the wrecks for some good catches of blackfish. Last week he had a great group of high school students from Cinnaminson out on a cold and rough day. The group from an AP Environmental Science Class handled the conditions well and all went home with bags of cleaned blackfish. Several of the students limited out.  Saturday’s trip with Captain Frank was right on the money again as a boat load of regular anglers mugged up the blackfish. Several anglers limited out while most had 3-5 keepers. Dave won the pool with a 5.2 pound fish. On Sunday a limited group went out and caught plenty of fish, but many were throwbacks. After weeding through the shorts, most anglers limited out on 1-3 pound fish and the pool winner was 5.5 pounds.

Other captains continue to catch nice sized striped bass with Little Egg Inlet being the hot place to fish. Both the outgoing and incoming tides have been productive with fresh clams for bait and some clam chum working the best.

Weekly Report
Report posted by Jim Hutchinson Sr. of the on 11/17/10

The captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have been walking around with smiles on their faces, at least when the wind velocity stays under 30 miles per hour.

The striped bass bite is as good in the waters around Beach Haven as it has been for many years. The only thing that occasionally slows the bite for the inshore boaters and those who jig and troll in the ocean waters are the periodic high winds and tides.

The “Star Fish” out of Beach Haven fished for striped bass last Saturday with Captain Carl Shepherd and on Sunday with Captain John Koegler. Carl said they found a good amount of bass that were fat with clams and hard to catch. The fish kept bumping the baits but not picking them up. They had their anglers pick up the rods and bump the baits to entice the fish to bite.

Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” has been returning from his fishing trips with nice sized stripers in the box up to 30-pounds. He has been doing the bulk of his fishing in the waters of Little Egg Inlet and some calmer areas just inside. He likes to anchor up and fish with fresh clam baits.

The “Miss Beach Haven” with Captain Frank Camarda had a private party out last weekend that wanted to fish despite the rough seas. They managed a mixed bag of striped bass, bluefish, and blackfish. Captain Frank and his crew are excited now that the daily limit for blackfish is back up to 6 per person.

Striper fishing
Report posted by Carl Sheppard of the Star Fish on 11/14/10

While the height of the seas kept most boats in the bay, the bay was a fine place to be. Star Fish found striped bass on Saturday with Captain Carl and on Sunday with Captain John. The fish were large and fat with clams and very hard to catch. The bass kept bumping the baits, but not picking them up. To catch one you had to grab the rod and tease it gently. With good weather looming, the fishing offshore should pick up for the next few days, when we can get back to tog and bass offshore.

Weekly BHCFA Report
Report posted by Jim Hutchinson Sr. of the on 11/10/10

This past week saw two of the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association ramp up their fishing action with topnotch results for their anglers.

“The Miss Beach Haven” and Captain Frank Camarda ran a special 10-hour wreck trip last Saturday and returned to dock with 28 happy anglers. Despite conditions on the sloppy side, the steady fishing kept everyone satisfied. The first drop had good action, but a high concentration of throwbacks. The next location was about 20-miles off and produced many nice fish in the 3-5 pound range until the dogfish moved in. After trying two more unproductive spots, Captain Frank found the hot spot. There was steady action on black sea bass, triggerfish, and cod. Many anglers returned to dock with up to 20 fish and the low hook had 11 keepers. “Black Cloud Ted” won the pool with a big cod fish.

Captain Fran Verdi on the “Drop Off” reports “the striper fishing on LBI just continues to get better and better.” One day recently fishing by himself he boated three keeper fish to 22-pounds, all on live spot. The next day he had the Jeff Austin party out for a day of very good striper action. They boated five keepers and lost another three at the boat. They were anchored near the inlet and fished with fresh clam. Captain Fran says they fished the inlet but not in the whitewater.

Both the good wreck fishing and striper action should last well into December.  Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 1-877-LBI-BHCFA (1-877-524-2423).

Weekly Association Report

Things just continue to get better and better for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association. First, the season for black sea bass reopened on Monday, giving the captains the opportunity to get in on some of those big humpback sea bass.

To really get the ball rolling, Captain Frank Camarda of the “Miss Beach Haven” is planning a special 10-hour sea bass trip this Saturday, November 6. The boat will be taking only 28 anglers and should be a fish catching bonanza.

The next bit of good news for wreck fishing will be November 16 when the daily limit on blackfish rises from one to six.  The next item that has the captains excited is the blossoming striped bass fishery. Although there are occasional days when the fish seem to have lock jaw, the numbers and sizes of the fish being caught are very exciting.

Captain Fran Verdi on the “Dropoff” has been targeting stripers for the past couple of weeks and is mixing up his techniques and locations to find the best action. He has been catching fish in the back bay, in the inlet, and in some areas that are secret to him. A good portion of his action has been on fresh clams. One of his anglers, Tom Mannix, picked up a 26-pounder on Monday in Little Egg Inlet. The fish measured out to be 44-inches long, a real nice fish.

Weekly Captains Report
Report posted by Jim Hutchinson Sr. of the on 10/27/10

Striped bass have arrived in the waters surrounding Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, and some giant bluefish are also providing action for the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association.  Captain Tim Knorr of the “William Knorr” took his mates and a friend out trolling along the beach just off Island Beach State Park. The bluefish action was red hot with 4 out of 4 lines going off at least twice, and multiple hook ups most times. Blues ranging from 9 to 12 lbs were caught trolling 6" chrome spoons, magnum stretch lures and white shad umbrella rigs. Everything worked but the chrome jig was the favorite. The group kept 5 and tossed the rest back. and headed for home early.

Captain Tim plans to target striped bass in the next several weeks.  Captain Fran Verdi of the “Drop Off” has boated keeper stripers on a daily basis for his past few trips. On Sunday Jack landed a 20-pounder while on Monday George boated a 15-pound fish while Captain Fran caught his own 19-pounder. He plans to fish for linesiders every day the weather permits.

“The Miss Beach Haven,” a head boat, will also be targeting stripers now since the action has been good.  Last week Captain Fran Camarda took the “Miss Beach Haven” on an overnight tuna trip to the canyons with five anglers. In addition to lots of laughs, the group ended up with one swordfish, six yellowfin tuna, and two long fin tuna.

Captain John Lewis on the “Insatiable” was out trolling for bluefish last weekend when he encountered a school of bluefin tuna feeding on the surface. He managed to hook up with one of the big tuna, but the fish straightened out the #9 hook after a short battle.

September Fishing
Report posted by Carl Sheppard of the Star Fish on 9/05/10

Star Fish found good fishing on the days before the hurricane, but had to stop for Friday and Saturday due to the confused seas. Sunday again gave us fine weather. The inlet had small blues and herring under the birds. We found croakers in 70' of water off Beach Haven and also ran into some spike weakfish. Keeper Black bass were mixed with croakers and small fluke in 90' .

Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 8/26/10

Last Friday June Bug fished the Jeff Lawrence party including pre-teens Joe and Mike.  Sea conditions were excellent for the boys' first ocean fishing trip.

Everyone fished hard and actually ended up with a few keeper Sea Bass.  No keeper Fluke though.

Mate Pat Zazacky had his hands full getting tangles apart and was a great asset in the cockpit.

We still have a couple of openings for charters prior to the closing of the Fluke and Sea Bass seasons.  Give me a call to discuss at 609-685-2839.

Winds Shift In Our Favor-Fishing Turns On!!

The west winds which have plagued our area have finally turned to more of an easterly direction the last week and warmer waters which followed brought some excellent fishing. The ocean temps are now in the mid to upper seventies and we have seen some of the best ocean fluking of the summer. We had some wonderful catches of fluke and sea bass over the last few days with fluke up to 23" and tipping the scale over 5lbs. We also found some nice blues along the beach and trolled them up using Clarke Spoons. The water is still a bit green for my liking but if the fish are there and biting then that's really all that matters.

Our crew the last two days
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 8/18/10

In our last 2 Fishing Reports, we failed to give due credit to our cockpit crew, Patrick Zavacky and Hep Hepburn.

Pat has been in the BHCFA Junior Mate Program for two years and has definitely learned his lessons.  Pat is definitely qualified for mating Inshore and we are delighted to have him on board.

Hep was a Junior Mate a year or so ago but could not be in the program this year.  He required surgery on his shoulder due to wrestling inuries at school and was in rehab most of the summer.  Hep first worked with me on June Bug when he was 13 two years ago.  While unable to work as a mate the last two summers, Hep has certainly not forgotten what he learned on June Bug and we are very pleased to have him back on board.

Good people are very difficult to find in any industry but we are working with two of the best.

Inshore Fishing on Tuesday, August 17, 2010
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 8/18/10

The weather was far better on Tuesday than it was on Monday.  Today was the Cassidy family fishing trip.  Father Bill and 3 sons from Rockland County, NY.  Great guys and they worked hard at catching.  We found plenty of fish but only shorts came to the surface even when Sea Bass were showing stacked on the bottom.

They did catch a lot of Sea Robins though.  While most of the family caught orange Sea Robins, one son could only catch brown ones so got the brunt of the razzing.

The 3 sons are all firemen.  2 are volunteers and the other is full time in New York City.  Their party received our discount for active Police, Fire, and Military members.

There are plenty of quality dates left for both Inshore and Offshore.  Call me for details.

Carl Nicolosi with his cousin, sons and nephews, plus the cousin's wife fished on June Bug this past Monday. It was far windier than what had been forecast. The cousin had had a double transplant several months ago and suffered bouts of nausea. Add the bumpy ocean and the guy was not in good shape. We cut a full day charter to a half day.

At times, the drift was just under 3 knots. We caught short Fluke nevertheless. Everyone hung in there.

Hot Tuna canyon report
Report posted by capt. bob gerkens of the Hot Tuna on 8/16/10

The Hot Tuna and its charter braved some strong East winds on Saturday mid-day to head offshore for a 24 hour canyon chunking trip. The charter party, organized by Mike Kellogg and his adventuresome 5 colleagues, kept spirits high, not withstanding the sloppy weather. Even though the winds laid down nicely for the overnight chunking portion of the trip, it had limited success with only one small mako (released), but at least a hundered squid attracted to Hot Tuna's underwater light were netted which the party plans to make into numerous Calamari meals. The evening and morning trolling portions of the trip produced 4 yellowfin, a wahoo and bonito. Capt Bob Gerkens of the Hot Tuna was assisted on the charter by Capt. Fran Verdi, who took a day off from his own charters on the Cousins and Drop Off to run the cockpit for the Hot Tuna, with the assistance of the Hot Tuna's Junior Mate Pat Zavacky.

Fishing &; Catching Lately
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 7/31/10

June Bug has been busy with family reunions and Mate Rewards the last week or so. The weather has been outstanding and much of the fishing has been outstanding too! It’s all how you look at it.

Last week was the week of family reunions. We had a reunion of a Canadien father, two Canadien sons, and two Canadien sons-in-law, eh, on Thursday. The Potter clan are all Montreal Canadien fans of the first order. They also had a great time on June Bug, caught dozens of short Fluke that they couldn’t keep, yet insisted they would be back since they were having another family reunion on LBI next year. 50+ short Fluke and no keepers.

On Friday we had two brothers and their combined 3 children ranging from 15 down to a first grader. Haden was the little guy and he worked his butt off to catch short Fluke. The party caught over 50 short Fluke again that day. Toward the end of the trip, Haden asked “Capt. Lindsay, don’t you think it would be a good idea to let each person take one fish home to eat?” How about that, National Marine Fisheries Service? I think that would be a great idea. Let’s work on the math considering the mortality penalty you place on released short Fluke against what recreational fishermen may catch and keep. Good thinking Haden!

On Monday, we had yet another family reunion. The catch was over 50 short Fluke yet again and we had the repeated question “Capt. Lindsay, why can’t we take at least one fish home to eat?”

I promise to bring that excellent question up with National Marine Fisheries. I will port their answer(s), assuming I get any.

Now we come to today. The weather forecast for offshore was outstanding. Offshore winds variable under 10 knots with seas less than 2 feet. The Rutgers Surface Temp Service told us the fish should be there, and we had no charter today. We decided to invite our mates to enjoy a busman’s holiday and go catch some Tuna, etc. Art Barstow who helps with our mechanical issues and our Junior Mate Garrett Frey stepped right up and said they would be on board. Several other candidates for the trip received voice mails yet did not respond until later giving all sorts of foolish excuses. One responded that his sister-in-law was in town. What better reason to leave his wife and her sister together to talk about him while he snuck off to go fishing? The whole bunch would have had Tuna on the barby tonight. After all, what is more important than going fishing on a great weather day when we also knew the fish were hungry?

We left the dock a little after midnight due to one of the crew showing up late and not loading the boat fully with ice. We never have too much ice. I doubt he will forget that detail again. We reached the point where we started fishing inside the Lindenkohl Canyon about 6 miles from the 100-fathom tip about 4:45 a.m. From the number of lights, we figured that about 25 boats had overnighted in the Lindy. We trolled over our normal pre-dawn lumps and humps with no luck. It has been that way this year. Little pre-dawn action inshore of the Canyon tip. We trolled the 100-fathom edge for about an hour and then, at dawn, moved into the deep where the success has been the last month or so.

In almost exactly the same spot where we caught a 160 pound BigEye three Saturdays ago, we hooked up a nice 75 pound Yellowfin and Art Barstow masterfully cranked the fish to gaff in about 10 minutes. Several fish came up in the pod but none of the others hooked up. Garrett nailed the fish right in the eye with his gaff.

Nothing happened for about a hour and a half until the Captain, as is his wont, announced he needed a “nap.” OK, the Cap went down to the bunk and the joke worked again. Within a few minutes, the cockpit crew was yelling “Hey Capt. Lindsay, FISH ON!” Garrett Frey, our super star Junior Mate for 2010, caught his first Yellowfin Tuna. Another 75 pounder that tested Garrett just about to the limit.

The action was structured today. The water had lots of “busy” areas where the water had little ripples in areas surrounded by mirror smooth water. In those areas, bait was present and was where we caught our Tuna, they were certainly feeding on the bait in these “busy” areas. These areas were very obvious on the surface.

We had one spot where a very lit up White Marlin came to check out our Cedar Plug that was one of our short flat lines. After cruising under the Cedar Plug and investigating it for what felt like forever, the White disappeared and we didn’t see it again. Odd it came up on a Cedar Plug when a number of baits with Ballyhoo were available.

We moved across the deep to the SouthWest wall of the Lindenkohl and moved around to the turn where the bathymetry lines went around the corner to the Spencer. In returning back along the 450 foot line to the Lindy, we got hammered by large Mahi that were hanging out around a 10’ long board that was covered with barnacles. None of the Mahi hooked up trolling but after we refound the board, Art and Garrett had dug out light spinning gear and tossed small chunks of Ballyhoo near the board. We spent the next hour or so bailing Mahi Mahi. Not super size but 10 pounds or better for the most part. I asked the guys not to catch and keep more than they could eat fresh, not frozen. I am not big on frozen Mahi. It seems to gain a leathery texture and the cooked flesh just does not taste as good to me. Frankly, we could have sunk the boat with these Mahi today.

After the bailing of the Mahi, we ran back to inside the 50-fathom line and started trolling back across the high ground. There had been reports of fish there but all we got was another inquisitive White Marlin that checked out several of our baits, all of which had Ballyhoo on them. Didn’t jump on though.

It was the end of a super day and we went home. We had a boat covered in Mahi blood to clean and some Tuna to steak.

Everyone needs to know that this is the BEST Tuna year in over 20 years, bar none. Do NOT miss getting in on the Tuna this year. June Bug and the rest of the charter fleet have plenty of dates available for you to take part in this incredible happening. Call Capt. Lindsay Fuller at 609-685-2839 or e-mail me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to discuss your trip and the dates your group can all come together.

However, please do not ask me to put together people for your charter. This is very difficult to do and I have no guarantee that casual pick-ups will actually show up. With the quantity of Tuna available this year, sit your friends and family down and decide on dates you all could go and then call me so we can block out your date on our schedule.

On Friday, Tim & Dan Shook brought 3 children between them, the youngest was first-grader Hagan, and they had a great time together too. Everyone caught plenty of Fluke but not a keeper in the lot. It sure is a pleasure when well-manered kids come fishing with us. These three are a credit to their respective parents. Hope we see this family froup again.

Today, the Inshore charter was booked by John Moss who was up from DC. Again the party was made up of brothers, sisters, and children. Everyone including Jeff caught Fluke. A few were close to keeping size but not a one hit the 18" mark. We did have some flurries where the Fluke came up as fast as everyone could reel.

We have heard a lot of comments from charter customers this year that "Wouldn't it be nice to be able to take one (1) Fluke per person home with us?" I would bet that the charged mortality to the Fluke biomass would not change much if that were allowed since a high percentage of throwbacks get charged as "dead" by the feds.

We canceled an Offshore trip on Sunday due to the weather offshore. Not pretty. We had offered this charter Monday as a weather day but they refused. Then when the weather offshore turned bad, they wanted to go on Monday. When they turned Monday down, we booked John Moss' trip. Just some advice to newcomer offshore fishermen. Take the Captain's advice especially on weather. You will get to go fishing offshore but safely.

Plenty of great fishing dates left so call Capt. Lindsay Fuller at 609-685-2839 to discuss.

Inshore Fishing with the Canadiens, eh?
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 7/22/10

Today was a fun trip.  Everyone including the June Bug crew had a great time.  Celebrating the 70th birthday of Pop Potter, four sons and sons-in-law took Pop deep sea fishing.  The whole clan was vacationing on the north end of LBI for the week but the women and children were left behind for this trip.

I have to tell you that the June Bug crew has seldom worked as hard as we did today to produce fish.  The result ... 2 tiny Sea Robins.  A sad, sad result.  However, the key goal of the day was met.  Everyone had a great day on the ocean and with each other.  Isn't that why you really charter?

Junior Mate Garrett Frey ran his first charter trip by himself and did a great job.  Way to go Garrett!

Hopefully the Potter clan will make this an annual event.  Thanks for coming with us on June Bug, guys!  Glad you all came to LBI for year 2 of your family reunion.  See you all next year!  Maybe we will get you out tuna fishing!

Report posted by Carl Sheppard of the Star Fish on 7/12/10

Star Fish fished on Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July with groups of 11-to 12 people. Each day we found large numbers of bluefish in 30- 40 feet of water which responded to well to metal on the jig or diamond spoons on the troll. Offshore we found black sea bass and fluke on the wrecks, with better fishing in deeper water. The numbers were good but the keepers were harder to find than last week. Both parties had a great time and say the fishing trip was well worth the drive down from Philadelphia.

Report posted by Capt. Fran Verdi of the The Drop Off on 7/11/10

On Monday we had Rob Weaver and son on for a half day trip out to GSS for sea bass. Got set up on a wreck that has been doing well for the last couple of half day trips and had a nice pick of sea bass. His son did most of the fishing since dad did not feel well. They can back to the dock with 10 keepers and had several tog that were let go. Wednesday we did an open boat trip with Eric Reinke and John Devone. The wind made us stay close and glad we did. Fished LER and had some nice fishing until the wind came. Had to make a move to some calmer and had Sea Bass and Fluke all day long. They came home with 9 sea bass and one fluke. Thursday's trip was the best of the week. Weather made it possible to get to deeper water and it paid off. Had to make many moves to find the fish but well worth the effort. Drifted the day away with very little current to anchor. Every area fished had fish but the bite was off and on. George and Don did a great Job with double headers of sea bass. George (aka Flukeguy) once again pulls a fluke out from 80 feet on the third drift of the first stop. To round off the crew, I had mate Zach and Jr mate Dilon Kelly on board. Dilon did a great job for the first trip out of the year. They came back to the dock with 29 sea bass and one fluke.

Have a small party and still want to get out.

Offshore Fishing on Saturday, July 3, 2010
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 7/03/10

You know the old saying, what a difference a week makes?  Well sometimes a new week is not needed.

For example, last Saturday, June Bug had a two-man charter party from West Bloomfield, Michigan who just wanted to have fund and catch fish.  The June Bug crew accomodated them with some nice Yellowfins, Mahi, and a very spirited 450 pound Blue Marlin out of the Lindenkohl.  Weater and sea conditions wer super and we had not seen as much bait, Porpoises, Pilot Whales, and Fin Back Whales in 20 years as we did last Saturday.  No wonder there were lots of fish.

Fast forward to Saturday, July 3, today.  The weather forecast was similar to last Saturday, winds less than 10 knots, seas less than 2 feet.  In actuality, when June Bug arrived at the Lindenkohl at 4:15 a.m. this morning, winds were between 10 to 15 with gusts to 20 and seas were 3 to 5 but nice and blue again with plenty of bait, porpoise, and other activity.  However, we had no knockdowns on the high ground or around the pots at the drop.  We moved into the deep and found far warmer water.  The best we had all day was 77.3.  Mostly the surface temps were 76.5 or so.  There was a 1.8 degree temp break with a long line set right on it.  That's where most of the fish were.

This week June Bug had Ralph Hibbs and his nephew Kevin plus Bill Figley and his friend Tom, a retired State Trooper Unit Commander on board.  Capt. Nate Figley was aboard as mate and Garrett Frey, who came all the was from Wabash, Indiana, was our Junior Mate.  Garret's sole reason for coming to LBI this summer is to participate in the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association's Junior Mate Training program.  It is spectacular that a young man such as Garrett would first find our program and then enroll.  After his actions today, Garrett is off to a fine start.

So here we are this morning in the Lindenkohl.  There were about a hundred boats already in that Canyon.  Most were working the 100 fathom line but we didn't like what we saw there.  We worked out into the deep and away from teh fleet.  At about 5:45 a.m., our first action was an attack by a pod of Bigeyes.  At least 6 or 7 fish were involved and 3 hooked up.  2 came off pretty quickly but Ralph Hibbs stayed with his fish and got it in the boat in about 30 minutes.  As Nate carefully wired the fish at boatside, Garrett deftly gaffed the fish in the head.  His first big fish gaff and he hits the target dead on.  Great job, Garrett!  The fish weighed an estimated 160 pounds.

A short time later, a pod of smaller Yellowfins swarmed all over everything we were dragging.  One came aboard, about a 35 pounder.

Not long after, small groups of larger Yellowfins started to smack our spreader bars.  We started landing the larger tunas in turn.

Our action tailed off around 10 a.m.  All fish had been raised and caught in 76.5 or so water in depths between 1,800 and 3,000 feet.

Since our fish storage was full, we quit early and went home.

Another great day on the Ocean.  Book your Great Day by calling Capt. Lindsay Fuller at 609-685-2839 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Offshore Fishing - Saturday, June 26, 2010 A GREAT DAY!
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 6/28/10

June Bug hosted two avid fishermen from Michigan on Saturday, June 26. Jon Kunzman and Adam Brown were grad school roomies and have fished in Cabo, Central America, Belize, the Keys, etc. before.

We left Beach Haven Yacht Club a little early and arrived at the Lindenkohl Canyon about 4 a.m. We could only see one other boat when we arrived and started to fish about 6 miles inshore of the 100 fathom tip. There had been a large number of Bigeye Tuna reports and the boat we could see reported that they had one Eyeball that had caught Friday evening. so we loaded the spread with spreader bars with large baits. Sea conditions were outstanding. Wind about SW 10 knots, seas 2 feet or less. Nice blue water with more bait, porpoise, pilot and larger whales than we have seen in 20 years. Many Fin Back whales about 60' long. Everyone was stoked.

Not a knockdown until well after dawn. We then got covered up with Skipjack Tuna who ate everything we had out, large to small. Of course, anything with a Ballyhoo was gobbled up. We released all the Skippys and got back to business. We then started a steady pick of short striker Yellowfins that we figured were shorts. After a short while, mixed with missed strikes we had a good hookup with a larger fish and line peeled off. After a decent fight for its size, we put a 35# Yellowfin in the box. A few minutes after, a 10# Mahi was in the box. 20 minutes after that, in the same spot as the first Yellowfin, another 30# fish was in the box. Shortly later, another Mahi bit the dust.

We then went a whole hour and a half with nothing. The water looked great. Plenty of activity and bait but no fish. We then deployed our secret weapon. We don't mind discussing this since it only works on June Bug. The captain loudly announced he needed a nap and mate Capt. Nate Figley took the helm. The skipper went below and hit the bunk for literally less than 2 minutes when the yells started "Hook Up!".

The captain was back at the helm and the cockpit was cleared. Nate had our party trained well. Everyone pitched in and Jon Kunzman of West Bloomfield, Michigan was on the rod. The fished screamed line off and went deep.

Jon handled this fish correctly but the fish just kept taking line and taking it fast. We'd get some back and off the fish would go at speed again. After about 20 minutes, using his harness and belt to the maximum, Jon gave to the rod up to Adam Brown also of West Bloomfield, Michigan.

We all figured we had an Eyeball but after about 25 minutes, the line angle started up and all of a sudden, with about 650 yards of 50# Stren out, the most beautiful Blue Marlin of about 450 pounds started tailwalking across our wake. The Adam kept the line tight and gained a lot of line during that part of the tussle. After backing on this big girl, the angler started short stroking gaining about 18" of line per pump. He got most of the line back when the Marlin would take it right back out, first quickly, then as the repetitions wore on her, more and more slowly. Adam stayed with her the rest of the way. He did a masterful job on this fish.

She was finally brought to the boat and released after about an hour and forty five minutes total.

The fish hit a Ballyhoo topped with a red and blue 1/4 ounce mylar Billy Bait. The leader was Stren 300#. The leader was thoroughly bruised at the end and broke just above the hook a second or so after mate Capt. Nate Figley took control at the end. The fish had wrapped the leader around its mouth and bill in the last stages.

A great day on the ocean.

We tell people that fishing from the middle to late June offshore is some of the best of the year. Blue Marlin, White Marlin, and Yellowfin Tuna are there in quantity and we have had some of June Bug's best fishing each year during this period. Potential charter customers should not bypass this period for later in the year. Next season, give the last half of June a try.

There are still some excellent dates available. Give us a call.

Fishing 6-25-10
Report posted by Carl Sheppard of the Star Fish on 6/27/10

Star Fish hosted 10 members of the Brennan family at a fishing party the weekend of June 25th. Ranging in age from about 8 year old up, even those who had never fished before became good fisherpersons by the end of the trip. We went out to the reefs and found a sufficient number of Black Sea bass to keep the party busy and happyIt was interesting to note that the larger fish seemed to prefer spearing and clam to the more traditional baits. . The party was treated to the sight of a number of schools of porpoises feeding, and one large thresher shark. The weather was beautiful and the seas flat due to a mild NW breeze. We ended the day with more than enough for fillets to enjoy for dinner.

This is a great time to fish offshore.  In 2001, on the Saturday of this Tournament, we hooked, tagged, and released a Blue Marlin that measured right at 1,000 pounds.  In 2008, we hooked a big Blue Marlin just after 3 p.m. lines out and fought this fish for 3-1/4 hours.  The leader broke at the hook just as the mate closed his hand on the leader.  The anglers had the fish near the boat about 10 times during the fish but could not ger her the last few feet.

We have won the Wahoo prize in this Tournament and have caught quite a few Yellowfins that just missing placing.

Inshore Fishing Last Friday, June 11, 2010
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 6/16/10

June Bug fished a grandfather, father, and son 3-generation party last Friday.

Sea conditions were perfect. It was a nice, warm, wonderful day on the ocean.

The Sea Bass fishing was excellent but not on structure where we would normally find them. For some reason, we caught the Sea Bass drifting in areas where we normally catch Fluke. Go figure. Every Sea Bass we brought up but one was a keeper and many were nice "blue humpers."

First thing in the morning we did check the beachfront up to Ship Bottom for pods of Bunker. That morning there was not a Bunker to be found. Unusual. There had been large pods every day before and there were large pods every day after last Friday too. They didn't always hold Stripers but at least the Bunker were off the beach.

Our Friday party wanted to try something other than Sea Bass after a while and the only option was small Bluefish back in Greta Bay. Capt. John Lewis, our mate last Friday, figured out that the Blues didn't want the normal small Clark spoons and started fishing large, 6" spoons on small trolling weights. In 4' to 5' of water, this method took the baits down about 3' at 5 knots. We started bailing the little guys. Fun on light tackle.

This trip was on Jim's (grandfather's) Bucket List. He had always wanted to go deep sea fishing. We didn't get him any huge fish but the family group had a great day together and that's really what fishing is all about. I kidded Jim and told him that he needed to amend his List. Separate deep sea fishing into two categories. One for Inshore and another for Offshore where he would have the chance to catch some "Fish of a Lifetime."

Let's Go Fishin'! There's plenty to catch.

Lots of Fish June 12

Report posted by Carl Sheppard of the Star Fish on 6/13/10

Star Fish went fishing twice on Saturday June 12th. The first trip was six hours and the catch was over 200 black sea bass, the largest being 5.25 lbs,  we also caught and over 10 good size tog. Too bad tog season is closed. The second trip was a bachelor party. Fish and fun. We went to some shallower wrecks and netted fewer fish, as we had only 4 hours, but we still put a good number of keeper black bass in the box the largest was about 3.5 lbs. As we came in, we saw some birds working and stopped to find out what the commotion was all about. Some two pound blues hit the metal we offered them. Fun was had by all. The same day one of Star Fish’s other captains went off even farther on his own boat, and found lots of blue fin tuna up to about 80 lbs. If I tell you where, he would kill me.

June Bug is Baaaaack!
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 6/09/010

June Bug had an uneventful trip from Oregon Inlet, NC back to Beach Haven last Saturday.  We had terrible crew problems this year getting people who could arrange the time to help bring her home.  We left Oregon Inlet at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and pulled into our dock in Beach Haven at 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Capt. Michael Yocco and Art Barstow went along with me on the boat while Jim Hutchinson, Sr. was out faithful driver to get the truck home.

Sea conditions were super.  2' or so for the whole trip with 10 to 12 knot SW winds.

We had to get back last weekend since we had a charter on Monday.  However, due to some mechanical problems, we ended up not fishing on Monday.  We had gone to the Beach Haven Yacht Club to pick up our party and to refuel.  We fueled but the port engine got an air lock that took hours to free up.  Our party graciously agreed to come back on Friday.

We got the air lock freed up and got back to our dock around 2:30 p.m.

Thank goodness we had Capt. John Lewis along as mate on Monday.  Between Capt. John and Capt. Rich from TowBoatUS, the two of them figured out what was wrong and got it fixed.  Thanks, guys.

So it is now fishing time in New Jersey.  There are lots of prime dates available, the weather has been great this spring, so get your friends and family together and come on down.

It has been a record-setting tunafish season at Oregon Inlet this spring.  If you didn't get down there to catch big Bluefins, BigEyes, and school Yellowfins, you really missed out!

Weather permitting, we will leave Oregon Inlet (Nags Head), NC with the charter fleet Sunday morning, go out to where the fleet has been catching 'em between The Point and the Triple Zeros, and start north along the 100 fathom line.

We plan to arrive in Beach Haven around dinner time on Monday if all goes well.

A report about the trip will be posted after we get back.

Chris Gadd and Jack Walters joined Mate Zach Ruba on an open boat trip in search of stripers. Stripers did not show but what did show was a Drum that was weighed in at the Chum bucket and tipped the scales at 64 pounds. The drum was followed by blues to 10 pounds and shark to three feet. Many of the blues were let go but Jack did take 9 home for friends.

5/15/10
Today we had the O’Neil party on for another day of Blues and sharks. Set up in the same area and it was game from when the first clam hit the water. There 12 year old son had a ball with all the blues and sharks. They brought back to the dock 17 blues with the largest one to be about 7 pounds.

5/16/10
We not much to say about this one. Had Mike Kreammer and father for a day looking of the striped ones. Made the turn in the inlet and headed up the beach looking for bunker. Had alot of nice marks but they were deep down. Trolled some stretch 25’s and had no takers. Since the bunker was not on top made our way back to the inlet to set up for the out going tide. Needles to say it was a slow day had several sharks and only three blues to the boat. The blues made there way to the dock and that was it for the day.

Open boat ran today with Bill Ross, Merle and Friend. Found a nice spot close to the inlet for the last of the out going. Shortly after the baits hit the water it was game on with the blues. Had about 5 blues in the box up to ten pounds when two rods go down and they were not fighting like blues. Had our first two bass of the day. One was 30 inches and the other was 36 inches. Tide went slack and we were back into the blues again and put four more in the box for a total of nine to ten pound. Started to let go the blues and was still looking for some more bass. Tide turned and the blues fest continued. Then another bass came to the boat and it was 35 inches. Shortly after that we had our first shark and then the bit died and the wind picked up and had nothing from 12noon to 1:30pm when we picked up and went home.

Fishing for Big Blues 4/24/10
Report posted by Carl Sheppard of the Star Fish on 4/25/010

Star Fish went fishing for bass and ended up with somewhere over 40 Big Blues! Better keep your steel leaders on you rings, because the fish could chew through 100 lb test on the way in.

A great time was had by all - Even the blues seemed to be having fun. They were eating spearing and small mackerel

Black Fish (Togue)
Report posted by Carl Sheppard of the Star Fish on 4/19/010

Blackfish (Tautogue) fishing is still open, so Capts Carl and John took Star Fish out with a party of 8 fisherpersons to a favorite black fish wreck on Sunday. It is a high wreck in 65' of water. In about 2 hours fishing we ended up with 30 fish. The largest was over 25". Also of  note, the stripers are moving down from the rivers and into the bays and inlets. Best fishing has been on the ebb tide. There are some bluefish also in the bays.

Open boat ran today with Bob, John and John. Left the dock around 7:30 do to the west wind and the blow out tide. When we go to our spot for the day found that we had wind against the tide for the last part of the incoming. As the tide went slack we had our first hit and and the fish came to the boat and spit the hook just out of reach for the net. It would have be a very nice keeper to start the day. Shortly after that John had a nice fish but much smaller than the first one. The fish ended up to be 25” so back in it went. Made two more moves but had no other hits on any of the lines for the rest of the day. Nice day to be on the water but the fish did not show today.

The Rob Fraley party was on for Rob’s Birthday. Left the dock around 7am and got to an nice spot in some deeper water. Fishing in about 10 feet and the water temp starting at 54 and rose to about 58. Fished about two hours of the incoming and had some small bit but nothing took the hook. As the tide turned we had a raise in the temp and then it was game on. Rob’s Cousin landed the first fish and was 28” and as they were taking pictures of that fish another rod goes down and Rob had his Birthday wish of a nice 31” striper. Donna was next with two nice runoff’s line pealing off the rod and Donna was unable to get the rod out of the holder in time and they both spit the hook. Had some more small play with the rod but nothing came tight. End the day with two in the box.

Open Boat ran again today with Bruce, Chris, and Jack. The plan was to fish the last half of the out going and then fish the first half of the in coming. Got set up and thought it was going to be a great day. There were several nice hit but they did not take the hook. As the tide bottomed out Chris had our first hook up and the fish can to the boat and was a short 25”. Jack had the next fish and it looked to be bigger but just fell short of the 28” mark and back in that one went. When the tide was to turn we found that the wind picked up and had wind against the tide for the rest of the trip. There were lots of laughs on this trip but no fish in the box. Water temp was between 60 and 62.

Open boat ran today with George, Chris Gladd, and Chris’s sister and boy friend. Left the dock in the fog and made our way over to Great bay. Pick a spot and got set up for the incoming tide. Water temp was 52 to 54. Had several hits and with in about and hour had our first hook up and bragging right went to the the young guns on the boat. First fish came over the rail and went in the box at 29”. Had several more misses and then the young guns did it again with a small fish and it was Chris’s sister first striper. A kiss and back it went in. Once again Chris was doing alot of swing and misses and it happen again. The young guns had another hook up and this was going to be a nicer fish it made several runs and then was in the net and was 33”. Ended the day with two in the box.

Well the first open boat ran today for stripers with Chris Gladd and Jack Walters. We got to our spot with about and hour before high tide and had wind against the tide but once the tide went slack we had our first fish of the season at 26”. Tide started to run out and for the next several hours we had several hits but could not get them to take the hook. Around 2pm it was game when Jack had a great strike and missed it and Chris had one at the same time and landed the fish. First keeper of the year was a 29”. The we set the lines out again and within 15 mins. Chris was on again with a nice 33”. Jack also land a 14” Catfish. Ended that day with two fish for the guys to take home for dinner. With the warm weather the bit should be on.

End Of Year Report
Report posted by Captain Dave Wittenborn of the Compass Rose on 1/05/010

It's been a while since I posted a report. Things have been busy in a good way but I of course have managed to put in several fishing days in this fall. Sandy Hook was very successful this year. The fish showed up in full force around November 1st and I managed limit catches every time I went out. The large cows were hard to come by with most of the fish around 30 inches which is good eating. The largest bass I got this fall was 17lbs.

I made two side trips this fall. The first trip I made was to New York City with the family in the boat. I have spent my entire life boating around LBI and have never been in a boat in NY Harbor. It was quite an experience and the ship traffic was incredible. There was no wind but the seas were averaging around four feet with the large tankers and freighters barreling their way through. We stopped in at Chelsey Piers and had lunch and then made our way over to Ellis Island and Liberty Island. It was a great day and a nice new experience.

My second trip took me to Pine Cay in the Turks and Caicos where I fished with my good friend in a wahoo tournament. Unfortunately, we caught the tail end of a late season hurricane and we were fishing in 8-12 foot seas. The wave period was pretty spread out so it was not as bad as it seems but 12 footers are still pretty intimidating. We did manage to put five wahoo in the box and tied for first place. We still had a great time hanging on this beautiful private island drinking Presidente beer.

I will be attending the AC boat show this winter in February and will be working a few saltwater sportsman shows for the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association. There is a march on Washington in late February to protest the unreasonable fishing regulations which I will be attending and I encourage everyone else to attend. There will be buses leaving from all over the state and I am sure if you visit some of the other fishing sites and check the paper there will be plenty of info. I will update my site with additional info on the march as more info becomes available.

So hunker down for the winter and relax because the spring will be here soon and we will be back at it again.
